WZL of RWTH Aachen University

The Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University
enhances the innovative strength and competitiveness of the industry with trend-setting basic research, applied research and the associated consulting and implementation projects in the field of production technology.

The Chair of Production Systems deals with issues of product and process planning of manufacturing companies under the direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dipl.-Wirt. Ing. Günther Schuh. A particular strength is the close connection between engineering and business research.
This includes core topics such as integrated product and process design, cooperative value creation, enterprise development and enterprise modeling. The chair also researches the implementation of individual Industry 4.0 infrastructures based on lean processes and practiced lean methods.

Under the direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Robert Schmitt, the Chair of Production Metrology and Quality Management researches and works on the industrialization of operational processes in production engineering.
Guided by the paradigm "Automation of Automation", the Model-based Assembly Automation group researches the paradigms of future assembly systems. Research topics of the group are, for example, novel guidance systems for lineless assembly, as well as automation and communication technologies (e.g. reinforcement learning, 5G) for the use of mobile robots and manipulators in assembly.

The research project is implemented based on the requirements defined by the WZL with regard to assembly organization and control. The concrete implementation within the application scenarios also falls within the scope of the WZL. The WZL is entrusted with the task of building the demonstrator and commissioning it.
